The Zelda Argument That Never Ends

By R. Stamper · 7 min read

Every Zelda fan has a defining game. The one they came in on, that everything else gets compared to. If you started with Ocarina of Time, every dungeon since has had a shadow it can't quite escape. If you came in through Breath of the Wild, the older games feel like museum pieces — beautiful, but rigid.

There's no neutral position here. Every list ranking the series is a confession.

So instead of writing another one, here's the matchup. Vote between pairs, watch the order shake out, then come back and yell at me in the comments.

Hot take: the conversation about "best Zelda" is really a conversation about whether open-world is a feature or a creep. BOTW and TOTK are masterpieces of freedom; Majora's Mask and Wind Waker are masterpieces of constraint.

People who pick the open ones tend to like fewer guardrails in everything — UX, work, weekends. The other camp likes a curated experience. Look at your pick. Look at how you make coffee. Tell me I'm wrong.
